Dobbie’s Florist: Canada’s Oldest Family-Owned Florist Blooming Since 1888
Dobbie’s Florist: A Blooming Niagara Falls Legacy Since 1888
For more than 137 years, Dobbie’s Florist has been woven into the fabric of Niagara Falls, Ontario. From humble beginnings in a backyard greenhouse to becoming Canada’s oldest family-owned florist, Dobbie’s has remained a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, and community through five generations of dedication.
A Humble Beginning in Niagara Falls
The story of Dobbie’s Florist began in 1888 with Scottish immigrant John Dobbie. Originally a schoolteacher and principal from Airdrie, Scotland, John settled in Niagara Falls and built a modest 12 x 32-foot greenhouse behind his home on Victoria Avenue. What started as a hobby quickly flourished into something much greater.
Residents were captivated by the beauty and quality of his flowers, and demand grew rapidly. Before long, the greenhouse evolved into Niagara Falls’ very first florist shop — laying the foundation for a family business that would stand the test of time.
Growing Through Generations
Dobbie’s Florist became more than a business; it became a family tradition. In 1918, John’s daughter Eva Dobbie took over operations, continuing the family’s commitment to quality and service. Over the decades, each generation added its own touch while preserving the values that made the shop special.
Today, Dobbie’s Florist continues its long-standing family tradition under the ownership of Patrick Vandersluys, representing the next generation of leadership and dedication to the Niagara community.
From Backyard Greenhouse to Floral Landmark
At one point, Dobbie’s operated nearly three acres of greenhouses, becoming a major floral presence in the Niagara region. Although a devastating fire in the mid-20th century forced the business to relocate from its original greenhouse property, the family persevered and rebuilt.
Through every challenge and milestone, Dobbie’s Florist has remained a trusted name for quality flowers and exceptional customer care.
Royal Recognition & Hollywood Connections
Few florists in Canada can claim the remarkable history that Dobbie’s Florist has built over the decades.
The shop created a bouquet for Queen Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) during her 1939 visit to Niagara Falls. In 1991, Dobbie’s supplied flowers connected to Princess Diana’s visit, adding another royal chapter to its story.
The florist also played a role in Hollywood history by assisting with floral decorations for the 1953 film Niagara, starring Marilyn Monroe — a movie that helped put Niagara Falls on the global stage.
These prestigious moments reflect the exceptional reputation Dobbie’s has earned through generations of artistry and professionalism.
A Trusted Name for Every Occasion
While its history is extraordinary, Dobbie’s Florist remains deeply rooted in everyday community life. The shop continues to create stunning fresh flower arrangements for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, sympathy tributes, holidays, and special occasions of every kind.
Generations of Niagara families have trusted Dobbie’s to help celebrate life’s most meaningful moments — a testament to the relationships and care that have defined the business since 1888.
Celebrating More Than a Century of Service
In 2018, Dobbie’s Florist proudly celebrated 130 years in business, marking a milestone few Canadian businesses ever achieve. Today, after more than 137 years, the company continues to thrive while honoring the traditions established by John Dobbie over a century ago.
From a small backyard greenhouse to one of Niagara Falls’ most cherished businesses, Dobbie’s Florist is more than a flower shop — it is a living piece of Canadian history.
